If a child was diagnosed with pdd/nos,does that mean the child is autistic?

Nope...Pervasive Developmental Disorder, Not Otherwise Specified means that some austic or other pervasive developmental characteristics are present. PDD is a class of disorders...and Autism fits in that class...the NOS when put with the PDD is a diagnosis that means the child doesn't meet the criteria for autism or anyother PPD...but clearly has symptoms of one or more disorder.

In other words, a psychiatrist evaluates a child and initially determines that this child has a PPD...he investigates further to determine which PPD the child has, but finds that the child does not meet all of the criteria of any one PPD, so he then diagnoses the child with PPD NOS.If a child was diagnosed with pdd/nos,does that mean the child is autistic?
Madre gave a very clear explanation.

Here is a good website for more information about PDD-NOS:

I used to teach at a school for special needs students. I had a couple of students with PDD-NOS. They definitely did not fit the characteristics of autistic children. If a child was diagnosed with pdd/nos,does that mean the child is autistic?
