My son is 7 and diagnostic with ADHD/PDD-nos when he was 5.?

I was reading some questions and answers search by PDD.

ADHD has the same symptoms as PDD -

ADHD is treated by medication

PDD is autism which is not treated by Medication (may be harmful?)

ADHD could be the same as Bi-Polar (searched for bi-polar)

Bi-polar sometimes mistaken for Manic Depression?

Better (in some cases) to be treated by Psychiatrist as oppose to Pediatric.

This is pretty confusing, but I really appreciate everybodies thoughts, researched knowledged, and experiences.

My son is currently on 54mg of concerta for ADHD. Sometimes he still doesn't listen in classroom (thinking about something else).

Question is, will a psychiatrist be bettter for him even if he can not express himself too well and can not understand what the doctor is saying without me translating in with words he understands? I like for him to visit without me so that he feel free to say anything he wants. Sometimes I think he say what he thinks I want to hear.

I would have him evaluated by a pediatric specialty team at your nearest children's hospital or rehab center. My daughter was dx'd with ADD/ADHD/PDD-NOS and then High-functioning Autism by her ped and later by state funded physical and occupational therapists through early intervention. She was medicated at the school's insistence for ADHD. When that made things worse instead of better, we had her evaluated at our local pediatric rehabilitation center and learned that she was actually a perfect match for the symptoms/actions of Aspergers Syndrome and early onset bi-polar disorder. The reason the meds made things worse was that with bi-polar, you can't give just the anti-depressant, you have to do a mood stabilizer as well, or the manic symptoms will intensify and often times go out of control. Hope you find the help you need to help your child
Try the psychiatrist because they deal specifcally with illnesses and disorders of the brain. My son is 7 and diagnostic with ADHD/PDD-nos when he was 5.?
I would not put such an important question on yahoo answers.

Talk to your pediatrician about your concerns.

Write your questions down before your appointment so you don't forget.

If you are not satisfied with that Doctors answers, get a 2ND opinion.
I am relly not sure what pdd or adhd is. But i wish I could help.good luck!My son is 7 and diagnostic with ADHD/PDD-nos when he was 5.?
yes, you need to let a child psychiatrist treat him.

There are so many overlapping symptoms with bipolar disorder and adhd--that an expert needs to sort that out.

Because a child that age isn't able to articulate enough to describe their symptoms--the Dr will talk to you about your child.

Know the symptoms of ADHD, and Bipolar Disorder and watch your child for any new behaviors.

a great source of information is the "Child and Adolescent Bipolar Foundation" check it out

and good luck
I don't believe in ADHD, so keep that in mind when I answer this...I knew a girl that had her kid on this drug regimen most of his childhood...when he was a teen, he continued doing other drugs, oxycontin that he was stealing and he OD'd and died at 21. Don't do this to your kid! Little boys cannot sit still and kids daydream and need breaks and require a teacher that can keep kids interested. Find another teacher...

bipolar and manic depression are the same thing

if your child sees a therapist, you should not be there with him, the Dr should be a specialist trained to work with this age child

autism is a difficulty processing the world around us and many do not speak and do a lot of head banging and acting out inappropriately. the Dr should be able to make this diagnosis or to rule it out.
Wow! What a mess.

First of all, bi-polar is the same as manic-depressive. (Just the "new" name)

Secondly, a child psychiatrist will know how to talk to your child. They don't use big words--not even with me (LOL).

Third: Maybe you should hav e your child evaluated again. I think these labels get slapped on a lot of kids for no reason other than they are acting like kids and "bugging" someone. (I day-dreamed a lot in class, but was an "A" student when I was actually intrigued by something.

My personal feeling is that we drug kids at much too early an age. Of course, I don't know what sort of behaviors and symptoms you had to deal with before you took him for evaluation.

Be very careful to get a second, third, fourth opinion until it is one that YOU are comfortable with and that seems to help the child.

Personally, I think that some sort of mental health professional would Be good for him, and maybe for you and dad and any other siblings, too.

There is no definitive answer here...you keep going and trying until something works.

But, in the meantime, just hold him and love him--that's the best medicine. Good luck and bless you.
I would ask your pediatrician to refer your son to a Neurologist before a Psychiatrist. I have a 23 year old daughter with Asperger's Syndrome that went undiagnosed until she was 16. They are still discovering new bands in the Autism spectrum.

I refused all medication for my daughter because until they know exactly what they're dealing with, how can they possibly medicate her? I'm not a big fan of medication to begin with but when the Doctor's are unclear then there is no possible way I will allow it. I think people give average GP's far too much credit. They seem to be under the impression that what they tell you is Gospel. Well, I'm here to tell you that she went to over 30 Doctors about this in her life, and was given over 30 different opinions. When she finally got into a Neurologist, things started to happen. He ordered an MRI for her and was a lot more open minded about Autism. There is no diagnosis per se for Autism other than a parental evaluation in the form of a questionairre which has proven to be very accurate in her case.

A Neurologist can also be far more beneficial with diagnosing Bi-Polar.

Once diagnosed, I chose to treat her with Alternative Medicine and have found great success...better than ANY of the GP's could offer. This was done with the approval of her Neurologist and she is now flourishing. She is working full time, Doctors wanted to put her on Government assistance for life. She just returned from a trip to Europe (without Mom!) and is doing so well. I will continue with Alternative medicine for life and am now putting other kids on it with success as well.
