Any qualified professional should know that just because a child cannot be tested doesn't mean he has a low IQ. Plus, at that young of an age, ANY kiddo is difficult to test, let alone if there are Autism/PDD-NOS factors involved.
But, if they suspect that he does have IQ-issues, it's not because he can't be tested... it's from other factors, such as multiple, delayed developmental milestones (walked late, poorer fine motor skills, poorer social skills, poorer communication--both expressive and receptive, etc.)
BUT, again, I should hope that the qualified professionals know that with students on the Autism spectrum, it's the factors related to the Autism/PDD-NOS that is impacting the ability to obtain a valid IQ score, not the kiddo's IQ itself. I truly hope these individuals are going to address your son's NEEDS based on the delays and not based on an IQ score at the age of 3.My son three and half years has PDD Nos?
My nephew has PDD and his IQ is right where it should be for a 4 year old. His Speech is delayed but other then that he is a normal 4 year old with a few issues.
With PDD he has his good days where he will do what is asked then other days he wont do anything.
what they did for testing with my nephew was take him to the test and watch his behavior and if he seems frustrated remove him from the test for a few minutes then see if he will go back. if this doesn't work reschedule the test.My son three and half years has PDD Nos?
PDD OH NOES!!!!11!!
IQ tests for kids with PDD NOS is really silly to begin with because the testers in general aren't going to get an accurate result. Please! Sorry. I'm just a little surprised that they feel the need to give him an IQ test. I'd suggest asking them why they want to give it and what use it will be in treating/helping him.
My son has high-functioning autism and his teachers, etc. told me point blank it would be a waste of time to give him an IQ test when they could see how smart he was even if he isn't able to learn as well as others are. They also told me that they knew they wouldn't get an accurate result because of his situation.
The main thing right now would be to focus on therapy to help him develop his language abilities, etc. If his IQ is low, they can worry about that later, but right now it seems like it would be more useful to work on therapy for him. But talk with them and find out why they want these scores and if there is a real use for them, or not.
Best wishes.
