PDD NOS stands for Pervasive Development Disorder, Not Otherwise Specified. It means that a child exhibits characteristics of a Pervasive Development Disorder, like Asperger's and Autism, but does not meet the full diagnostic criteria according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-IV TR).
So, they may have all the social deficits, but don't exhibit the repetitive movements. They technically can't diagnose Autism or Asperger's, but something is definitely going on. So, they may diagnose PDD NOS. In time, the child may meet criteria and they will look at the diagnosis again.
