my teen was diagnosed asperger but when I looked up different disorders under autismic spectrum, asperger and pdd-nos were so similar, what's the difference? Therpaist said pdd and then shrink said asperger, when i asked shrink why she said asperger, she said well anyone high functioning with soem autistic traits they call asperger and something like those who are younger and have more delays get pdd, is this correct? ThanksWhat's the difference between asperger and pdd-nos?
All autism spectrum disorders are also pervasive developmental disorders. Asperger's is mild and high-functioning autism without the speech delay. PDD-NOS means significant autism traits, but not enough to meet the diagnostic criteria for another PDD. Someone with PDD-NOS could be high- or low-functioning, or anywhere in between. What this psychologist told you is too simplistic and places too much emphasis on age. She owes you a thorough explanation of the diagnosis and what it entails.
Here are the criteria for Asperger's: http://www.aspergers.com/aspcrit.htm
And for autism: http://www.autreat.com/dsm4-autism.html
And here's an explanation of PDD-NOS: http://www.iancommunity.org/cs/about_asd鈥?/a>What's the difference between asperger and pdd-nos?
Ok, "Pdd" Pervasive developmental disorder refers to a group of five disorders characterized by delays in the development of multiple basic functions including socialization and communication that has traditionally been referred to as autism.
"Aspergers" on the other hand is an autism spectrum disorder that is characterized by significant difficulties in social interaction, along with restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior and interest. It differs from other autism spectrum disorders by its relative preservation of linguistic and cognitive development.
Thats basically the difference and I hope it helps you :D
