Any suggestions on how to toilet train an autistic (PDD -NOS) 4 year old?

He will go #1 when asked, but will continue to go in his pull-up if he needs to. Refuses to wear regular underwear. Still sitting down to go #1. Haven't tried standing up. Also, there is not one thing that I can bribe him with except the computer, and that is not something that I let him do all the time b/c he is obsessed. I've toilet trained several students with austim in my classroom. What works for one child doesn't always work for another, but a few of the successful things I've done are....

- Use Carol Gray's Social Stories. They are short (one page) scripted stories about various social situations. I have read the "Using the Toilet" story many, many times to a student, had the student read it with me and eventually have the student know if by heart. By that time he knows exactly what is supposed to happen when he has to go to the bathroom.

- Go shopping for a bunch of small toys, or have him go with you and pick out favorites. At home, put them in a special box. Tell son that when he uses the bathroom on his own without prompting, he can pick out a "potty prize." If you reward frequently, especially at first, it will become natural for him to use the toilet without prompts

- I've put posters and decorations up in the bathroom that would be at a students eye level to make it more appealling. A "Where's Waldo" poster works great in my experience.

Don't worry about the not standing up, that will come in time.
stop stressing and let thing happen in their own time, the more you try to force the issue the longer it will take.

Autistic kids are often very phobic about texture and the way clothing feelsAny suggestions on how to toilet train an autistic (PDD -NOS) 4 year old?
Make it a game. I've read somewhere that you can throw some Cheerios in the toilet and tell him to aim at the cheerios during #1. I don't have any advice on using regular underwear. But hope this works. If you try it, let me know if it works. You can email me. Hope it helps.
Check Richard Foxx's book " Toilet training in less than a day". He is a doctor that specializes in behavior analysis and autism.Any suggestions on how to toilet train an autistic (PDD -NOS) 4 year old?
hi i work in a center for adults with special needs and some still sit down ,as he is only four and you dont say if he is useing a normal toilet or potty if you are useing the normal toilet let him sit untill he can stand if you want to go quicker and stand find something he can stand on it will help him with climbing latter as autistics sometimes have problems in that area if you are using a potty move him on to the normal toilet it might make him feel older olso he could go with his dad it see how its done good luck
