some schools will do an EDUCATIONAL diagnosis of autism.....
they are probably saying that he doesn't need autism based services in their opinion
autism is a form of PDD
with PDDNOS, aspergers, retts, and childhood disintegrative disorder
many docs use pddnos and autism interchangeably
some kids on the autism spectrum don't need an autism based instruction approach and will be classified something elseKindergarten not recognizing PDD-NOS diagnosis as Autism?
The school doesn't really need to qualify your son for services based on the medical diagnosis, but they as sure as ____ have to provide services based on his needs. Sometimes personnel can be a bit callous and abrupt, unfortunately, they have to deal with so many cases, all different, while having budgets cut willy-nilly these days. This is not to excuse the director, just to emphasize that they sometimes misspeak under pressure. They are human, too. That being said, you know your child best, and I'm sure you will stay abreast of all his developments, changes and needs that can be addressed by services provided by the school system, and will continue to be your child's strongest advocate as he navigates through his school career. If the services they are providing are not adequate for your child's needs, the services must be readdressed. You have the option of looking for a special education advocate in your area (usually a trained volunteer who knows the system) who can help you through the red tape, and assist you if you need to fight for proper services. The accommodations schools offer Spec.Ed. students vary from district to district. They are mandated to provide equal opportunities for instruction, under reasonable guidelines, and the way school districts interpret those guidelines can vary greatly. Good luck, and keep reaching out for support.
