Can a child with pdd-nos also have cognitive delays and how can we have him tested [he is 5 years old]?

I have a child with pdd-nos an dhe has cognitive delays also . he is currently in a classroom for kids with the spectrum disorder . The problem I am having is that the teacher is putting him in a regular class in september because she says that she does not see the disorder . He is in kindergarden and the school is making him repeat the grade in th next school year. The doctor that diagnosed him now says that she is not sure what is wrong and that he is a puzzle. How can I find out what is really going on [the doctor is the top one in the state].i feel that he should not have to repeat his grade because of his problems. Can a child with pdd-nos also have cognitive delays and how can we have him tested [he is 5 years old]?
Do you have an IEP with the school? I homeschool my child with PDD-NOS/autism, they couldn't decide for sure which he had, so I'm not speaking from experience. But it doesn't seem like if you have an IEP in place that they can make the decision to move him to a regular class without your OK. Does he have any therapy outside of school? If so, ask his therapist for her opinion, and if she has any ideas. Has he seen a psychologist? They're trained to diagnose these disorders, they can do an evaluation with him. These spectrum disorders cover such a wide range of severity, I can't imagine them being that baffled. But then, it's the school district, too. The fact is, he's been DIAGNOSED with PDD-NOS, so it shouldn't matter what the teacher 'sees', or doesn't see. I'd definitely try to get him some more help through different dr.'s, even though that's a real pain. Don't allow the school district to railroad you on this, keep getting in their face over it, go to the school board, fight to get the IEP.Can a child with pdd-nos also have cognitive delays and how can we have him tested [he is 5 years old]?
I took my 2 year old to Childrens Hospital and he was tested there. Call some hospitals in your area and find out if they know where you can have him tested.

Make sure you have a specialist or team of specialists who come to the house to work with the child and to teach you other ways of communicating with the child.

Ask the peditrician for recommendations for a more thorough evaluation and diagonosis. PDD-NOS usually falls under the 'autisim' label but is not completely any one thing that can be recognized.
