1st grader can spell words, but not read them?

My first grade son can get a perfect score on his spelling tests, and sometimes even on his pre-tests. However, if asked to go back and read the words, he cannot always do so. An example of some of the words would be: "use, raccoon, your, where, animal, taking, etc."

Why would this be? I hadn't really ever heard of something like this before. I don't know if it makes any difference, but he does have PDD-NOS, which is an autism spectrum disorder.

(I know he's not copying from a classmate. He attends an online public school at home.)1st grader can spell words, but not read them?
i would suggest getting him tested. perhaps he has some kind of dislexia problem, but i really am not sure. . . a guidence counselor would come in handy here :)1st grader can spell words, but not read them?
How are his eyes.1st grader can spell words, but not read them?
Maybe it's because he is just memorizing how the words are spelled so he can pass the test and not paying attention to the actual word or meaning of it.
The PDD.NOS is why he can't read them but can spell them.

kids are taught phonics in school, this is learning parts of a whole and sounding it out.

Doesn't work with our kids and they don't accommodate that, though by law they have to in the individualized education plan.

Its very gestalt processing, they do not chunk small information its the whole she-bang. And its not isolated to reading, but with language acquisition too! Most kids that fall under 1 of the PDD's do not babble as a 7 month old, they don't do the ba ba ba, ma ma ma they are silent. To the point where many times parents and doctors are concerned about hearing. They don't do the consonant vowel progression. They talk late, and then bust out with some very not beginner words, even einstein (speculated to be HFA-high functioning autistic) said nothing till 4, his first words were 'cold soup'.

What we found works is the Orton Gillingham explode the code series. My son is 9 and in the middle reading group, he is PDD.NOS too. We began these in kindergarten.

I would suggest books 2-3 which is about 1st grade curriculum. I know its seems crazy to spend 7 dollars on these workbooks, but when I saw they worked, I bought all of them 1-4 and the half books too we do those in the summer.

In addition to the online school suggest putting these workbooks into his education plan
